Anything that has a mass and takes up space is known as matter. Energy is what can cause a change to matter. As energy cannot be created or destroyed, it gets stored or transferred. Kinetic energy is what a substance possesses due to it being in motion. The kinetic theory of matter states that matter is made up of small particles that are constantly in motion with spaces between them. (Andrew Rader Studios. Matter is the Stuff Around You. 1997-2015)
There are 3 main phases of matter that are solids, liquids, and gases. The difference between the phases of matter is the amount of energy they have. The kinetic theory of matter explains how a substance changes its state by the energy it gains or loses. (BBC Bitesize. Energy transfer …show more content…
An application of heat energy to a substance can cause the substance to change state by the heat energy transferring into kinetic energy of the particles the substance is composed of. The more heat applied, the more kinetic energy the particles within the substance possesses. The more kinetic energy the particles possess, the more they are able to overcome the intermolecular forces between them, therefore, they are able to move further away from each other resulting in the substance occupying more space and changing state. (Sarah Friedl. 2003-2016) (BBC Bitesize. Energy transfer by heating. 2014)
Solid: Particles within a solid have a really low amount of kinetic energy, the electrons move in the atoms of a solid this causes them to vibrate in fixed positions.
Heating a solid to a certain extent, depending on the solid, will cause the solid to melt into a liquid or will cause sublimation to occur where the solid changes directly into a gas.
Liquid:
Liquids conform to the shape of the container they are put in. There are still intermolecular forces acting between the molecules, however not as much as in a solid. The particles that compose a liquid have more kinetic energy to overcome these forces.
Heating a liquid to a certain extent depending on the liquid will cause the liquid to vapourise into a
