A helpless young lady named Kitty Genovese was murdered while her neighbors collectively assumed that one of the other neighbors was going to contact the police (“Bystander Apathy Experiment – The Case of Kitty Genovese Explained”). Every individual felt that since they were not witnessing this alone that someone else would make the decision to call and take the initiative to aid this young woman. The concept of bystander apathy correlates to the ideas of agency and choices by providing a choice and receiving a response based on the thought that someone else would do it. This is correlated to conformity where “individuals are less likely to help in an emergency when other people are present” versus on their own (“Bystander Apathy Experiment – The Case of Kitty Genovese Explained”). When Primrose was called, none but her sister jumped at a chance to take her place as a volunteer (The Hunger Games). The rest of the group followed group norms in being filled with relief that none of them were called but pity for the child that would end up taking one of their places. The society had conformed to the Capital societal behaviors of women and men being separated – each gender dressed in differently dull colors. Women wore mostly white clothing to symbolize their purity and cleanliness to be in the presence of the Capital’s representative and their guards.
