1.1 STUDY BACKGROUND
Hospital Acquired Infections (HAI) also referred to as Nosocomial infections are those infections occurring in a patient during the process of care in a hospital or any other health care facility that was not manifesting or incubating at the time of admission (Nejad, Allegranzi, Syed, Ellis & Pittet, 2011). Nosocomial Infections are not limited to the patients; they also include occupational infection among facility staff including the support staff who also come into contact with the patients. 1.4 STUDY JUSTIFICATION
It is evident that nosocomial infections cause a substantial upset to the quality of health care. If the hospital stay is elongated by infections acquired in the hospital, the patient satisfaction level is lowered. Despite the huge effort put in researching on Hospital-acquired infections, literature is limited in the developing world especially Africa. It has been shown that very few studies can be found in Africa and thus evidence-based practice affected in this respect.

Nurses are responsible for the smooth running of the wards; the nurse manager ensures that the patients are provided with optimally conducive environment to hasten the recovery process. Finding out the level knowledge on infection control by the support staff in the ward will ensure that indeed the environment is kept clean and conducive for patients healing.
