The success of change initiatives are often very low, which has something to do with the implementation of the change management plan, or who creates and implements the plan in the first place. According to a document from the Mind Resources Institute of Learning & Innovation entitled Leadership: Managing Change, “effective change management requires good leadership skills”, so the lack thereof, can have major consequences.

There are gaps to the skills needed to manage and navigate through change. In a research conducted by the Center for Creative leadership, Skills that are sorely lacking in many of organizations in the US are decisiveness, management change, employee development, inspiring commitment, leading people, strategic planning, and balancing personal life & work.
Recommendations
‘Skills and knowledge needed for managing change’ recommends that the right skills and competencies should be matched against the various steps in Kotter’s framework analysis, so leaders will know how to initiate each process. To create a sense of urgency, for example, a leader must have the skills to facilitate change, influence others, coach for change, and communicate effectively. (p. 13)
Examples and statistical information
A good example of effective change management is about a CEO of Siemens who drove changing in just 13 steps, starting with getting to know the company and change it organizational structure, and up to introducing diversity. (pp. 15-16)
