The goal of labor laws is to equalize the bargaining power between employers and employees. The laws mainly deal with the relationship between employers and unions. These laws allow employees the right to unionize, as well as allow employers and employees to engage in certain activities, such as strikes and picketing. There are also laws that are aimed at protecting employees in other ways, such as health. Two laws that will be discussed here are the Labor-Management Reporting and Disclosure Act (LMRDA) and the Occupational Safety and Health Act. Important parts of the law are the rights of employees to bargain collectively, as well the “meat” of the act, section 8, which establishes union and employer unfair labor practices and prohibits unions and employers from taking action against an employee because of their pro or antiunion stance. One possible change would be to include public sector employees, but overall, this law is very much still applicable. While it cost more to provide a better and safer environment, it also helped to save from injuries or even deaths that occurred, and still do, in the workplace. By establishing a safer environment, it too can help save from litigation should someone get hurt, had there been nothing in place. Again, there will always be injuries on the job as evidenced from the stat published by OSHA (n.d.) that states there were over 4,000 deaths in the workplace in 2013, but this is one law to at least help minimize the chances. Another big impact for employers is the fact they can be inspected and are not supposed to know when it will happen; employers must always keep the work environment safe and have the mindset they could be inspected at anytime.
