Answer the following questions pertaining to the case:
1. Based on the pathophysiology
a. Give reasons for Larry 's reported admission symptoms of muscle weakness, decreased skin turgor, tachycardia and hypotension.
b. Describe how this situation can be corrected.
A. Mr. Secord may be experiencing the following symptoms due to dehydration and electrolyte imbalances. According to (Gould &Dyer,2011,p.126) in ketoacidosis the body shift from its normal fed metabolism ( using carbohydrates for fuel) to a fasting state (using fat for fuel), the resulting increase in blood sugar occurs. The authors also state that as blood sugar levels rise, the kidney is unable to retain the extra sugar, which is dumped into the urine, thereby increasing urination and causing dehydration. (Katsilambros et al, 2012,para.10),states that clinical presentation of hypotension, tacychardia, poor skin turgor and dry mucous membrane are often found in patients with dehydration and hypovolemia.
One of the symptoms of ketoacidosis is polyuria, which is an excessive amount of urination. With the loss of fluids there is potential loss of electrolytes. Mr Lawrence Secord records show that he …show more content…
The authors also state that acute illness, surgery, and trauma raise levels of stress mediators, namely stress hormones, cytokines, and central nervous system, that interfere with carbohydrate metabolism, leading to excessive hepatic glucose output and reduced glucose uptake in peripheral tissues. In addition, acute illness increases proinflammatory cytokines, which increase insulin resistance by interfering with insulin
