Influencing is getting people and partners, or even external forces such as politicians or the media to do what you want them to do. Effective team builders use the chain of command to coordinate through partnering entities. Formal leadership is granted to individuals by virtue of position based on their rank and experience. In the military, leaders are backed by the uniform code of military justice which ensure compliance with orders. Informal leadership mostly extends through cooperating entities of equal position. In civilian live informal leadership plays a key role in mission accomplishment. In the military, rarely do people hold positions of a higher rank. In civilian life, they almost always hold those positions before being formally assigned because they must prove they can lead without authority- they must lead through convincing peers and subordinates (and sometimes even seniors) that their rationale is correct and
