Although George knows that Lennie has to take responsibility for his murder, he kills Lennie to prevent Lennie from being tortured, dying in pain, die in fear. George doesn't want to “let no stranger shoot [Lennie] because he feels that “[he] oughtta of shot [Lennie] himself so he aims “at the place where the spine and the skull [are] joined” so that Lennie can die painlessly. He also does this in order to prevent Lennie form having to suffer at the hands of others. Curley plans to “shoot for [Lennie’s] guts”, which is a painful way to die, and even if Lennie survives, they would just “lock him up an’strap him down and put him in a cage”. The biggest difference that shows what a difference love is how George protected Lennie's feelings until the end. George tells Lennie about their little “American dream” and “how it's gonna be”. While Curley's wife dies in terror, Lennie dies “[giggling] with happiness”. Lennie has love, and that’s what makes the difference in his death versus the death of Curley's wife. With no one to love her, Curley’s wife passed away without meaning. Lennie on the other hand will always live in the heart of George. The difference in their deaths is attributed to the love of one person. Love can make a big difference in people lives. How many people can die
