They interact and intercommunicate with each other in their respective social roles of grandmother and granddaughter. Leola’s grandmother speaks to her with authority given that she is the elder but she also advises her and speaks to her with love as seen when she calls Leola “sugar pie” instead of by her proper name. A nickname in this case is a sign of affection yet this is not the only way she expresses love, grandmother also expresses love towards Leola by caring for her safety. This is presented through Leola’s actions, instead of doing what her Grandmama taught her she did the vary opposite which caused her to suffer the consequences of her actions by being caught and scolleded by Mama Honeybear.
