This artwork seems to have a very positive mood when viewed, but further studies on Benois Madonna has shown that there is also a form of sadness and grief that is hidden within the artwork in the appearance of a flower of the Cruciferae family portraying a cross. Perhaps Da Vinci hid it to create an original artwork or to portray a mixed message. There is some speculation about if this is actually one of Leonardo Da Vinci’s works or if he had help or if it was actually painted by someone else. Scholars believe that this painting was painted by Da Vinci because of the similarity of style in the Benois Madonna and other Leonardo Da Vinci works. The reason for confusion pertaining to the actual artist is the style La Belle Ferronniere portrays is not similar to Da Vinci’s style that is shown in his other paintings. The posture of the woman is stiff and the woman’s features are dark and heavy. The painting was given the name La Belle Ferronniere because of the jewel, called a ferronniere, that the model is wearing on her head. Many people have copied La Belle Ferronniere but none have captured the same style or the same features and structure of the face.
