Undertaking Missions
People undertake missions. For example, Farah Ahmedi undertook the mission of getting across the border and getting to a better place for a better life. But what drives the people to undertake the missions? Is it determination, or maybe love? What drives people to undertake a mission is their curiosity, determination, longing, and ; all of the characters of these accounts have similar characteristics, like determination, and they are fit for the job.
Barrio Boy
In “Barrio Boy”, Ernesto wants something new. He seeks a new school, a new language, even a new country. Ernesto must be brave and strong to undertake his mission, and be curious about what the new country has to offer for his benefit. Ernesto was in first grade, and was very scared to go to a new school. But, he decides to be brave and go anyway, “I noticed other differences, none very reassuring.” This means that this new school was very different from the one in Mazatlan and he did not like the looks of it. She has to leave her war-torn country to be safe and have a better life. She needs to have trust, strength, and be curious what it’s like where she doesn’t have to worry about losing her other leg, or her life. She must trust the surrounding people, like her mother and Ghulam Ali, that they will help her and keep her safe through her journey. She states trust, “That Ghulam Ali was certainly a good man, so patient with us and so compassionate. He had never seen us before, and yet when he met us, he said ‘I will help you.’ ” This means that Ghulam trusted them, and Farah and her mother had to trust him back.
