The ‘Liver Cleansing Diet’ is a liver detoxing program that follows a mostly vegetarian, diary-free and processed food free diet. The aim of the diet is to cleanse the liver and help the vital organ become decongested to restore and maintain state of homeostasis within the body (Moritz, 2002). As the liver plays a major role within the body and the metabolic process, it needs to stay healthy through a well balanced diet to prevent the onset of chronic disease. The ‘Liver Cleansing Diet’ is claimed to have many health benefits such as improving the functioning of liver, increased levels of energy and vitality, removal of toxins, reduced inflammation and degenerative diseases and improving the immune system and fat metabolism (Klein and Kiat, 2014). The diet also claims to improve flexibility, reverse the aging process and allow for a clearer and more creative mind (Moritz, A 2002). However, the diet is most typically and known to be used for individuals looking to lose weight. At the present, there has been no scientific evidence to support the effectiveness of using detox diets to lose weight or their effectiveness in maintaining a healthy weight and the elimination of toxins in the body (Klein and Kiat 2014), there is also little to no evidence to support the other claims of the ‘Liver Cleansing Diet’. The client noted that by pre-preparing her meals at the start of the week it was easier to stay on track with the diet and it was easier to record using the food record. However, the client also noted that by sticking to the same meals each day it was also easier to ensure that she would not stray from the strict diet. Analysis of the one-day menu constructed, portrays that the ‘Liver Cleansing Diet’ does still allow the client to eat a wide variety of different foods, however, client’s who eat a wider variety of food may find the diet easier to follow and meet daily requirements. As the basis of the ‘Liver Cleansing Diet’ follows good principles, such as eating a wide variety a fruit and vegetables daily, it still is not be a suitable long-term diet, due to lack of daily and whole-grains. Although the client struggled through the three-day course of the diet, she attributes her difficulties due to the fact that she is a fussy eater and does not consume of a wide variety of different foods, such as seafood.

Overall, the ‘Liver Cleansing Diet’ emphasizes the importance and encourages the consumption of fruit and vegetables with every meal. However, there is very little to no evidence to scientifically prove the many claims of the ‘Liver Cleansing Diet’ such as weight loss, clearing complexion
