Throughout the novel, Jack constantly seeks for power and near the end Jack finally finds his power. “Jack rose from the log that was his throne and sauntered to the edge of the grass. He looked down from behind his paint at Ralph and Piggy. They moved a little further off over the sand and Ralph watched the fire as he ate. he noticed , without understanding, how the flames were visible now against the dull light. Evening was come, not with calm beauty but with the threat of violence” (Golding 150). This quote shows how Jack’s natural instinct to act violently is his identity. Because society has broken down, Jack is given the ability to do whatever he wants. Therefore, by acting violently and trying to obtain power, he shows how without society 's effect on his acts, his true identity is exposed. Throughout the book it is shown that piggy represents societal laws such as intelligence,logic,and order. Even though while on the island Piggy has no reason to obey the rules of the society he came from he still does. Piggy shows his intelligence and logic when he explains to the other boys that some of their thoughts are unreasonable. “The effort to express the mathematical process involved was too great. He made a few passes instead. ‘And an airplane,and a TV set,’ said Ralph sourly, ‘and a steam engine’ Piggy shook his head ‘You have to have a lot of metal things for that.’ He said,’and we haven’t got no metal.But we got a stick.’”(Golding 65). In this quote we see Ralph list a thing he wants on the island, Piggy then goes to show the reader how Ralph is being unreasonable. Considering the island does not influence anyone to obey the rules of society, Piggy’s reaction to the illogical suggestion is only influenced by his own beliefs , therefore his suggestion shows how Piggy is intelligent and logical.
