An estimation of 380,000 bed days are being lost each year, this study was undertaken in three large hospitals. In the article ‘Characteristics of Diabetic foot ulcers in western Sydney Australia’ diabetics have a 25% risk of a foot ulcer developing which can turn into a chronic non-healing ulcer. Ethical approval had been granted for this report and based on the PEDIS (Perfusion, Extent, Depth, Infection, Sensation) classification there are four grades of foot ulcers with the probe to bone technique being used. Of this study on 195 patients, 49% of ulcers were infected, 21.5% were of Grade 2 and 26.7% of Grade 3 and a total of 25.6% of patients were prevalent of osteomyelitis. Within a year 20-58% of diabetic patients would develop another ulcer, which was said to be due to increasing age as skin easily damages.
