The thought of traditional marriage and stableness of families shifted throughout the century all over. Stephanie Coontz discusses the myths and history of families and how they affect us with the challenge of recent changes. According to Dr. Coontz, “In colonial days’ women were called yoke meats… this invention of the ideal of the male bread winner in the 19 century, then It was an ideal that was only obtained by a tiny minority of families. It wasn’t till the 1920’s, even though the mom stayed home they sent the kids out for work. Only a tiny bit of families’ income was brought in from the husband while the mother was staying at home.” A lot of times, families were in fact one parent families due to death or divorced. Death of a parent usually happened 10 years before the last child was out of the house. More children went through divorced than death leading to step parents and step families. More problems were created with step families back in the day compared to nowadays. “Marriage was not about love, independent relationships but about property and power” According to Dr. Coontz. Stephanie Coontz states many facts throughout her speech. Along with those facts she’s go into detail to explain them and makes sure it all flows together. I strongly agree with many of her points. Marriage get ruined by the modern society nowadays. Throughout the century the idea of marriages changed greatly from what age you would marry and who the person you would be saying your vows to. In today’s society it is more known for divorce to happen than people spending many many years
