In “The Necklace” Madilta didn’t want to go to a party unless she had the perfect thing to wear. Madilta tried on many dresses and none of them worked. Matilda told her husband “I need 500 francs for the perfect dress or I won't go”. (Matilda 1).When Matilda finally found something to wear, she felt like the most beautiful girl at the party. Matilda got many of compliments like “ wow you're so pretty” or “you're so beautiful”. Matilda got very prideful with all of the compliments that she got that the next day she had lost the necklace that she borrowed. Matilda was too embarrassed to go to the person that she borrowed the very expensive necklace for the party from, so she got another job to pay for it. But later on Matilda learned that the necklace wasn't worth anything, and that if she was just honest then it would have been so much easier for her and she wouldn't had to raise money to replace it. This is important because Matilda learned that having pride doesn't have to be a bad thing.
Both characters identities are created through pride and realization. Matilda becomes prideful about her appearances but later realizes that consequences come from being so involved in being prideful. Amy Tan a Chinese girl, wants to be in the American culture instead. But when her family has an American family over for dinner she realizes what culture she is in and to embrace it instead of being embarrassed about it. While
