One of the events in his narrative brings us to an Italy where Lorenzon is rarely present—an Italy where all of the adversities that fail to touch Lorenzo in his bubble persevere. On a ride in Rome, Niccolo places different elements of a failing Italy in front of Lorenzo’s eyes to taunt him. On this car ride, Lorenzo encounters a Lazio supporter which symbolizes a Facist reaction towards the government. Dirty cobble stones are also a representation of the Italian governement’s failure to improve the sanitary conditions of public areas. However, the most striking event that signifies a collapsing Italy is the confrontation between Lorenzo’s mother and Teodoro. Teo’s unacceptable behaviors conveys the country’s disrespect against women and the tensions between Northern and Southern Italians. Although this event only functions as an extra in the overall plot of the story, it allows the reader to establish a deeper connection with Lorenzo and Italy. During the event of the car incident, we learn of Lorenzo’s profound admiration for his mother. This can be seen as a motive for Lorenzo being dishonest about going to ski week with his schoolmates. If only one event had to be considered supplementary it would be the moment when Olivia invites her friend over to Lorenzo’s hideout and sells him artwork in order to continue her drug habit. From these two minutes of screen time, the reader is able to collect information about Olivia’s past and witness one of moments where Lorenzo begins to feel deep affection for the unwanted guest. This event that the director added serves to expand our knowledge on Olivia’s background story. A notary action in this scene occurs when Lorenzo’s jealousy protrudes as Olivia’s older friend attempts to woe her and nearly convinces her to leave with him. Prior to Ferninand’s failed attempt, Lorenzo was indifferent to Olivia’s actions, just as long as she remained quiet about him inhabiting the cellar. This event reveals to the reader one of many motives that cause Lorenzo to perform a 180 on his attitude toward his sister. Lorenzo brought in Olivia to his circle beacause he sfeels sympathy for her erroneous decisions which have led her to form a sickening drug habit and shift her habits toward becoming a prostitute. Lorenzo recognizes that at the end of the day, Olivia is his blood related and he must protect her until she is stable
