When analysing an abstract concept, such as one affiliated with sympathy and empathy as morality is concerned, it is imperative to have a definition of what morality is. In most dictionary definitions, the common definition for morality considered to be “principles concerning the distinction between right and wrong or good and bad behavior, in order to conform to social circumstances.” In morality, there are two main components: consequence and purpose. When someone commits a crime, there is a common goal in mind for most criminals. Either, the betterment of the individual, or the betterment of those around them, or both, under normal situations, are the common cause for criminal activity. It is this that determines how a person will act and behave, depending entirely on the situation. When asked in a trial of court, it is often determined if the subject who has committed a crime is entirely of sound mind, and if their mental state or emotional state are altered so that they do not recognize the moral wrongness they might have committed. Along with this, it might be that the druggist was not behaving greedily as assumed, but instead was in a desperate situation himself along with Heinz and the dying wife, as he might lack the funds in his own personal life to keep his own upkeep and had to sell for a higher price in order to keep his own person from suffering. There is far too many factors involved, as in real life and not in this simple example, and attempting to create a measurement for the competence of Heinz’s morality and sentencing him depending on this, would be inaccurate and would fail to understand the all-encompassing situation and circumstances presented.
