Indeed, ancient societies invented art, music and spirituality long before they invented healthcare or money. These very important components of life are often overlooked by people seeking to solve the world’s problems – art, music, and dance are not seen as basic necessities of survival, so in the minds of some, why contribute your time to those aspects while so many other more pressing needs are not met?
The reality is, although we may not need the cultural arts to stay alive, we do need them to live a fully human experience. Art brings together communities, explores and celebrates emotions and identities, and uplifts the human spirit. So the proposal I am about to make is not frivolous. If you are able to volunteer to bring art to those who may not have many luxuries in their lives, this is a very valuable service.
Many homeless shelters or other programs for those who are disadvantaged are happy to have musical, visual, or performing arts brought to their constituents.
