The Calling of Saint Matthew Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio was known to be one of the most revolutionary artists of his time. Caravaggio is a distinguished artist who had a very large influence throughout the entire Baroque Era. He was born on September 29, 1571 in Milan. Caravaggio lived a very scandalous lifestyle (Caravaggio). What made Caravaggio’s paintings stand out was the realism he used through his painting techniques. Caravaggio is widely credited for popularizing and revolutionizing “chiaroscuro”, which was a painting method that focused on the contrasts between light and darkness in a painting. The Mona Lisa was painted from 1503 to about 1517. There are many important things to notice about this painting. No matter where the viewer stands, it will always appear that she is looking directly at you. These paintings are both very similar, but at the same time they have many differences. For example, they both have color but The Calling of Saint Matthew is more saturated than the Mona Lisa. This is true because Caravaggio’s piece of art has more reds and yellows in it, while Leonardo Da Vinci’s piece has more blues and greens. It is more dull, but still has some color to it. The Mona Lisa also does not have any lines in it. There are no lines in the Mona Lisa because it is only a portrait of one single person and there is no need to draw attention to any specific piece. They are both very realistic and not flat. In Da Vinci’s artwork, there is a large amount of shading done, which helps make the artwork look even more realistic. It is almost as if we are able to reach out and grab her hand. In The Calling of Saint Matthew it is the same way. It looks as if we are able to join them all at the table because there is a lot of depth in this picture. The Calling of Saint Matthew and the Mona Lisa are both oil paintings as well. There are many important factors that make up a piece of art. The colors used, and also what it is depicting make the artwork original. For example, if The Calling of Saint Matthew was not as saturated and was not realistic, it would have a very different effect on the viewer. It might have been harder to notice the halo through the
