Using metaphors make the novel seem wiser and compels the reader to ponder about what that metaphor stands for. ”the secret to life though, is to fall seven times and get up eight times” (Coelho vii) Coelho obviously does not mean to tell you to fall down exactly seven times, but to always learn from your mistakes so you can fix the eight mistake before it even happens. Symbolism can link the advice to certain words or situations. ”the secret of happiness is to see all the marvels of the world, and never to forget the drops of oil on the spoon” (Coelho 32) Whenever a spoon filled with oil is mentioned the reader would think of this metaphor, so that the metaphor will be more memorable. Symbolism is able to also give hidden messages that make you think about what it means. "You don't have to understand the desert: all you have to do is contemplate a simple grain of sand, and you will see in it all the marvels of creation." (Coelho 127) In something vast such as a desert, the small things that it is made up of are just as marvellous, however one must first take to time to truly take in their surroundings. He writes advice in a way that make’s the speaker sound very wise, increasing subconscious credibility so more people would apply this lesson. ”its not what goes into men’s mouth thats evil, Its what comes out of their mouth that is.”(Coelho 115) Short and sweet, also addresses real problem about why being under the influence of substances (alcohol, caffeine, drugs) is not an excuse for behavior and actions. The advice he gives is so true that if people were to apply that to their lives life would improve indeed ”there is only one thing that makes a dream impossible to achieve, the fear of failure” (Coelho 141) I know I am not the only one who has been stalled or stopped by the fear of failure or rejection, hopefully this quote would give the reader the courage to overcome this fear. The advice strives to be every emotional and philosophical, the message will have a stronger impact on that persons life.”remember where your heart is, there you will find your treasure.” (Coelho 135) Just by reading this text, even if the reader does not remember to live in the present and enjoy it for what it is (the quote’s message) the reader will feel wiser just by having that wisdom in his/her mind.
