The term Baroque meaning irregular pearl or stone derived from the Portuguese it is described as a fairly complex idiom which began in Rome and progressed during the 1590’s through 1700 it embraced sculpture, painting, as well as architecture. The style is profoundly tied to the religious and political context during this century after the protestant reformation the catholic church began its own counter reformation to ameliorate its power and attract more followers to the faith. The idea of the newly found style was for architecture, painting, and sculpture to all work together to create an affiliated effect. Caravaggio brought forward the basic incentive of the Baroque style during the 1590’s. He provoked a new interest in realism which attracted new artist like Bernini who used and developed the Baroque style in sculpture. The painting shows the moment when Paul is on his way to Damascus to carry out a persecution of the young christian community and he hears the voice of god and falls off his horse. The oil painting on canvas shows many aspects of the Baroque style creating dramatic lighting as well as movement from the placement of the characters.
