This specific style has more of the military like feel to it, and is used more often than none in businesses. In this style the leader is trying to soothe fears of those within the company. They give clear directions by using a powerful stance, commanding and expecting full compliance, not looking for input or agreement from those around them. One of the downsides to the commanding style is that it is used often and in most businesses but is not very effective within the company. Praise or commending the employees is very rarely used in this style of leadership. It is mostly pointing out the faults of the employee and criticizing the work that is being done. Morale is typically low in this type of environment, the leadership may seem more cold and distant. They can be viewed as unapproachable, so employees do not feel as they are able to be heard in this type of culture. A large component of the leadership style is the way a leader communicates with those around them. Good communication is an imperative skill the person leading the team should have. The leader must understand how to communicate on every level with their team, from the executives at the top to the lower level employees. The communication style is based off the audience needs and what goal they are trying to reach. For example the leader may have to use a coaching style in a one on one this employee meeting and then switch to the more commanding style with another employee. While verbal communication is the most obvious form of communication with the team a leader must be conscience of their nonverbal language as well.
