Introduction
After surviving nursing school to obtain my nursing degree, going back to school had taken a back seat on my list of goals. However, after working in the nursing field for the past two years, I have realized the importance and benefits of an advanced degree. My goal of attending graduate school is to prepare a career as a Nurse Administrator.
While looking for a school to obtain my MSN, a co-worker informed me about Walden University. She had nothing but good things to say about the program, so I looked into Walden University and its Nursing program. The mission statement of Walden University speaks about giving ourselves, as students and professionals, the opportunity to transform. On the other hand, the School of Nursing uses the word transform in reference to changing society; “…professionals seeking enhancement of critical thinking skills, abilities to select and implement evidence-based practices, and core and specialty nursing knowledge in order to transform society” (Walden University, 2015a, para.3). Transform can be used interchangeably with words such as: change, alter, renew and mold. Academically, I want to absorb as much information as I can so that I can transform and contribute to my organization and make a difference. My academic goal is a short term goal that will, in the end, allow me to be in a position where I can reach my professional goal. My professional goal is to be in a position where I can use the knowledge obtained from Walden University and my experiences to implement changes to better my organization, which in turn will better society. Several of my values include family, success, helping others, knowing myself and my spiritual life, which are very important. I really enjoy helping others, the many directions nursing can take you and the benefits are some reasons why I wanted to become a nurse.
