Therefore, this section presents the findings of gender equality issues showcased in the movie. Mike Newell, the director of Mona Lisa Smile, released this movie in 2003. The setting of the story, Wellesley College, is depicted as a prestigious and a conservative college for smart female students. In reality, it is a college for females that was established in the 1875 and has some notable alumni namely; Hillary Clinton and Pamela Sawyer. While Katherine Watson, the lecturer for the art history course, came from Oakland State, California. Betty Warren, one of the students, noted her reason to teach at Wellesley College which is to make a difference. The Italian professor, Bill Dunbar also added that the school needs her and changes take time. His statement supported that her effort to change the situation in Wellesley was regardless of the school's condition at that time. The story itself was set during the year 1952 until 1953 when the impact of World War II and the Pearl Harbor attack still affected the students and teachers. The story revolved around the students who were smart, diligent, and committed to their study. It was evident in their readiness to the class discussion and their ability to memorize detailed information of the paintings. Due to her different perspectives on women, marriage, and her modern teaching methods, the other professors did not welcome her.
