Part 1: According to the Mayo clinic Morgellons Disease is an uncommon disorder that needs further research. Some signs and symptoms of this disease are severe fatigue, skin rashes or sores, intense itching, short term memory loss, difficulty concentrating, crawling sensations on or underneath the skin, and black string-like fragments emerging from the sores. Some researchers from the center for disease control (CDC) believed that these signs and symptoms are similar to a type of mental illness called delusional parasitosis. Delusional parasitosis involves false beliefs about infestation by parasites, but after samples of the skin, blood, urine, and hair were studied the CDC believes that Morgellons Disease is an unexplained dermopathy. Morgellons Disease is more common in middle-aged white women. A recent review was conducted in London where 18 patients that had a diagnoses of either an unexplained dermopathy or Morgellons Disease was studied. They found that 83% were middle-aged women and 69% were white. Other than the CDC having their thoughts about this disease other healthcare professionals have different attitudes towards it. I choose to write about this disorder because I have never heard of it before and wanted to educate myself on something new. Some signs and symptoms include bumps on the skin that are hard, shiny, that could be reddish purple color. Sometimes the bumps have little white lines running through them that are called Wickham’s Striae. There is no cure for this disease and will often go away on its own. More severe cases can be treated with certain medications such as, antihistamines, topical cream, corticosteroid (prednisone), light treatment called PUVA therapy, or retinoic acid (helps clear the skin) (American Academy of Dermatology,
