The fact that the major city Naples and other surrounding cities are within close proximity make Mount Vesuvius one of the most deadly in history. The last eruption in 1944 lasted two weeks with hundreds of minor earthquakes since. The eruption of Mount Vesuvius was devastating to the city of Pompeii. Because it took years to get the city back to what is was before the eruption, the city’s economy was greatly impacted by the eruption. The amount of deaths that were directly related to the eruption also had an impact on the economy. Skilled individuals and labors were needed from nearby towns to help rebuild the city. The last time that Mount Vesuvius erupted was in 1944 and was estimated to have killed 30,000 people in the two towns Herculaneum and Pompeii. This eruption had the same effect as eruption in the past. Since the last eruption in 1944 there has not been an eruption with the exception of minor earthquakes and a false eruption in 1998 that had a cloud of gas and debris that killed 150.
