The landscape had shaped the culture and the history of these people in their original homelands, and now they had to adapt to a new environment west of the Mississippi River. As the tribes entered their new lands, the one thing they wouldn’t do was move beyond the hills, even though it was the southeastern part of Territory that resembled their homelands in the southeast. They had lived further west, which was treeless, had little rain, and was completely foreign to their experience. In addition, it was there where the Kiowas, Comanches, Wichitas, and Apaches, who were buffalo-hunting, highly mobile societies. Who would raid anyone that would settle on the Southeastern tribes.…
The small town of Pinedale, Wyoming is known for a diverse number of things. By and large, the community has always been known for its beautiful surrounding scenery, but also for the ranching community feel and the cowboy characters that live there. Imagine an area with an abundance of culture being affected by an industrial boom. Suddenly, the small town feel is gone, new people have moved in, and the appreciation for the culture that once existed there has been depleted by everyone ’s need to economically benefit from the environment’s existing natural resources.…
In the mid-1800s, early settlers saw opportunities in moving west to the vast landscape. Willa Cather’s “O Pioneers!” and Bret Harte’s “Luck of Roaring Camp” share the theme of how the pioneers interacted with the land. The authors illustrate the struggling efforts of working together as a family, the challenges of nature’s wrath, and even allow an insight into death among the settlers. Family and friendship was an important part of both stories.…

Essay 1 - Comparison When discussing states in this country it is common knowledge that each has its own unique personality. What most people don’t think about is how similar two places can be while still appearing completely different. Two states that people would not think have any similarities are Minnesota and New Mexico. Minnesota and New Mexico have very different landmarks, weather, and terrain but still share several things in common. Minnesota is located in the northern half of the country, which causes it to have humid summers and very cold winter weather.…
For several years, the idea of people coming over to a previously uninhabited land full of new rewards brought thousands of immigrants to the frontier lands. With this notion of moving west, many politicians acclaimed that this was America’s right to conquer from Atlantic to Pacific and that it was justifiable by Manifest Destiny. In addition to the influx of immigrants causing a population boom, new technologies stimulated improved communications and transportation that brought several more inhabitants to the new lands in order for them to work and get a better living. Manifest Destiny was especially seen to several as the 1859 Colorado Gold Rush brought instant fortunes for many and caused an elevation in the economic stature. Although moving…

During the first half of the twentieth century, the Colorado mountains became home to a handful of women who had fled the trappings of their former societies in hopes of refuge and adventure. One such woman was Virginia Donaghe McClurg, who became the first white woman to visit Mesa Verde and in later years would become immensely involved in the Colorado Cliff Dwellings Association, which fought to make the site a national park. Also an active member of this committee was Lucy Peabody, who, after a number of disputes with McClurg, became known as the “Mother of Mesa Verde National Park” due to the approval of her proposed Hogg Bill. For Susan Anderson, the Colorado mountains allowed her the opportunity to be taken seriously as a female physician…
We have come to learn over the course of time that American Native Indians still have no clear answer on whether they are considered sovereign or not. The definition of sovereignty is to possess power, and although some Indian Tribes are climbing the ladder in earning this right, there is one reservation imparticularly that is suffering due to the neglect of the US Government. The Pine Ridge Reservation is one of the poorest areas in America and suffers great poverty due to the actions of the US Government. The Snyder Act of 1921 charged the US Department of the Interior with responsibility for providing education, medical and social services to many Native nations and tribes, including the Oglala Lakota, yet this Act is not showing any…
When Daniel Elazar published his work on state political culture Nevada was an Individualistic state, and still is today. A state that is considered Individualistic has the following characteristics: government is viewed as an extension of the marketplace, government provides people with services they want, but do not interfere with the people’s private lives, politics are ran like a business, and the politicians are well-paid business men and women (Smith and Greenblatt 14). Nevada is an Individualistic state because officeholders run the government with marketplace tactics, achieving goals allows corruption to occur in many facets of the state, and its politics are left up to the professionals. A business-like culture is essential to be…

The frontier is a mysterious place full of opportunity and potential. It is the place that lies between the known and unknown, between civilization and wilderness. Modern maps with detail down to the almost the slightest detail.…

In The Horizontal World, a memoir by Debra Marquart, the author portrays the perceptions of her hometown, North Dakota, along with the rest of the upper Midwest in different perspectives. With the incorporations of many accounts of the region, Marquart includes the popular belief that the Midwest is dull and bleak. Though the memoir constitutes these stereotypical beliefs, the author uses these misconceptions in her argument to embody the importance of North Dakota. With the change of tone, use of diction, and the personal attachment to her hometown, the author is able to refute the generalizations made against the midwest & make the audience come to a consensus that there is a uniqueness to the undermined Great Plains. Marquart begins the memoir by describing the environment of North Dakota.…
Appalachia is a culture within itself created by individuals looking to get away from a more structural environmnet set with rules and limits.
