Inspector call's is a thought provoking play written by J.B Priestly it is set in the 1912. The play is about a family called the Birlings who have all misused their powers and have done something morally wrong at some point in the play. They are all at a family dinner party celebrating their daughter's engagement. When a inspector comes in and starts interrogating them about the suicide of a pretty young working class women. This play many interesting characters that all contribute in explaining the theme of the play by their actions and dialogues. Priestly has used this description to make the audience think that Mrs Birling is a cold, bitter woman. The character of Mrs Birling contrasts to the theme of the play which is social responsibility. Mrs Birling is extremely selfish and doesn't want her or any member of her family to be associated with the death of Eva Smith because she doesn't want to damage her reputation. This quote is highlighting the fact that this incident may have a negative impact on the relationship between Eric and Mrs Birling because she is responsible for the death of his child and this quote convey's an angry tone which shows Eric's annoyance at his mother.
After the family discover that the inspector was a hoax, we see Mrs Birling celebrating and feeling relieved as she thinks she won't have to suffer the consequences for her actions. The writer has used Mrs Birling's character to show us how sometimes once we feel that we are not going to be punished for our actions we tend to forget about the mistakes we have made.

This also shows that Mrs Birling hasn't learned from her mistakes and isn't considered of the girl and only cares about her own happiness. This makes the reader think that mybe this was a chance given to the Birling family to learn from their mistakes and repent over their actions. As at the end of the play we see that they receive a call from an hospital saying that a girl has just died after swallowing some disinfectant.
