There is a part in the story when Agustin gets the flu and he has to go to the doctor. He ends up going to the doctor’s office that Lola works at and sometimes when it’s really busy they need the extra help, so they’ll ask Lola to help out for a bit. The story reads, “Studying to be a nurse’s assistant would be the most natural thing for her to do. She weighed him, took his temperature, read his blood pressure, and handed him the glass bottle for the urine sample. She was methodical in how she did it because she wanted to impress him, although she was questioned whether he was well enough to notice anything she was doing. A few days passed before he started feeling better”. After that Agustin basically gets mad at Lola and he forces her to quit her job because he doesn’t like the fact that she walks around taking other peoples urine samples. A little while after that Agustin dies and Lola is left all on her own. She lost track of time and was looking at the photos for a while. The story explains, she spent the afternoon cleaning up the house and putting everything back in its place. Time passed quickly, until she got distracted looking at the old photos in the hatbox. Some of the pictures were more than forty years old. She found one taken in April 1947, when she and Agustin were honeymooning in Monterrey. They had spent the afternoon making love in their hotel room and that evening decided to go for a stroll”. Casares uses another moment in the story to use this flashback. Lola was having a great time thinking back to all the good times she and Agustin had together despite the fact how he treated her later in life. He didn’t really let her do a lot of the things she wanted to do. He wouldn’t let the family go bowling or really anything that you needed money to do.
