This immunization vaccine against Measles, Mumps and Rubella (German measles) was first developed by Maurice Hilleman at Merck. The vaccine is a live attenuated virus of the three diseases; Measles, Mumps & Rubella administered via injection. The first measles licensed vaccine was in the year 1963 and was improved after 5 years. Vacines for mumps became available in the year 1967 and that of rubella at 1969. The three vaccines were combined to form measles, mumps, rubella vaccine at the year of 1971.
The vaccine is usually administered in doses; first dose in children arriund the age of one year old and a second dose at the age of four-five years old.
There is an estimate of 52million measles cases prevented by the MMR vaccine in the first 20years since the licensure of the vaccine.

It is generally given to children of 1 to 2 years old. Merck and Co. developed MMRV vaccine (quadrivalent vaccine ProQuad TM) which can be used to vaccinate Mumps, Measles, Rubella, Varicella viruses simultaneously. This vaccine helps to increase the varicella vaccination resulting in decrease varicella disease. One of the benefits of using this quadrivalent vaccine is the reduction in injection site, as one injection is used in place of two injections.

Measles infection has caught a lot of attention for a disease that can be naturally treated by the body itself through cell mediated immunity. The number of death cases by measles infection is very low but rather its ability to cause other complication which can cause life threatening sequel makes it a serious infection.
Measles infection mostly occurs on children, young adults and pregnant women. These categories of individuals have a relatively weak immunity, favoring the virus to cause infection in their
