The nursing metaparadigm can be defined as “the four spheres of nursing knowledge that reflect beliefs held by the profession about nursing’s context and content” (Schim, Benkert, Bell, Walker, & Danford, 2007, pg.73). It is a conceptual framework that nurses use to provide quality care for their patients. The four focus points are nursing, health, person, and environment. Not only should nurses know what to focus on when caring for their patients/when in the field, but they must also know how to communicate with others such as cooperating nurses, doctors, patients, and their families. This definition is broad because nurses provide care for a wide range of patients. Patients differ in terms of age, gender, religion, beliefs, and health. Nurses are required to alter their care for each patient based off his or her wishes and this is why I think of nursing as an art. Nursing is an art because nurses are required to be creative when providing such dynamic care. It is crucial for nurses to listen, understand, and communicate with each patient to understand their differences. Nursing is not only an art, but also a science because of the different skills a nurse must possess. Nurses must be able to diagnose countless illnesses, as well as know their causes, and how to treat them. Being a nurse requires an individual to be creative and knowledgeable in order to be able to think critically while caring for a patient. Nurses revisit their assessment, diagnosis, and plan periodically throughout care. They reassess their decisions and alter their patient’s care to reach a desired outcome. It is the component of moral knowledge. It helps the nurse conduct their practice when making decisions for unique patients. For example, a nurse must make an ethical decision regarding how much medication should be given and how often. Nurses must make accurate decisions based on what they think is right versus what is wrong. I will use ethics when learning about different policies at hospitals. Ethics impacts personal and professional behaviors because nurses must practice their beliefs regarding ethics as well as follow their standards, policies, and procedures throughout their
