Our trip was focused on Bengali wedding fashion. There were shops lined up after each other, and I was surprised on how many fashion shops there were on a single street. I had never seen so many vibrantly colored garments at once! There were many different displays of beautiful clothing. One of them was the sari, which is comprised of one piece of fabric elaborately draped over the body. One in particular is “Indian Arrival Day” where the Indian population of Guyana celebrates the first day (May 5th) that Indian labourers arrived. As one can see, these holidays differ in background. The diversity of their holidays can also represent the diversity of their population.
For my event, I attended a show called Visions: An Evening of Songs & Dance at Richmond Hill High School. It highlighted Indo-Caribbean youths, and my partner was a part of the show. There was a large variety of acts, introduced by charismatic emcees, and complete with colorful costumes. Everyone was so talented, with traditional dances, instruments, and vocals—no wonder the entire audience was full.
I learned a lot about Indo-Caribbean music and dance, since I was introduced to so many acts in one night. Before today, I was never exposed to this culture and its songs. I also learned that my partner knows how to play the sitar, a plucked stringed instrument played in Indian music, and can sing beautifully. Being a part of the show was obviously a large commitment, and it shows her passion for her
