My boyfriend and I come from different racial backgrounds. I am Hispanic and he is Caucasian, so when I first went to go meet his family there were some stereotypical comments made about my ethnicity. For example, since I am Hispanic they assumed that my skin was dark colored, that I dressed a certain way and that my family was low-class. Although, I am Hispanic my skin is very light, in fact almost all of my family has light-colored skin and many of my cousins have colored eyes. This made me feel very angry. The fact that they thought I would have dark colored skin didn’t matter so much to me; however, the fact that they had made a comment about my family’s economic status bothered me. But instead of responding disrespectfully I responded by actually explaining to them what my parents’ professions’ were and by doing that I could tell that I changed their views on Hispanics and they hopefully would never make another stereotypical assumption like that to another
