In Dr. Owens’ speech, he provided proof, or backing, to support his theories and statements. An example of this is when Dr. Owens spoke about the education results of African American students. He stated that the education levels of African American students are low not because they are incapable of learning, but simply because they have developed a “Molehill mentality”. Owens delivered his speech in a way that kept the audience engaged. He used different tones throughout his speech. One of the tones he used was humor, and this helped to entertain the audience, and keep them engaged. He really used his humor to engage the audience, so when his tone changed to a more serious one, the audience was still interested in what he was saying. Dr. Owens also used bodily gestures in his speech, and used emotion in his voice. Dramatism Using the elements of the Pentad, the scene of this speech is the conference. The act is Dr. Owens giving his speech on “The Power to Climb a Mountain. He is speaking about two different mentalities: mountain mentality and the molehill mentality. His thoughts are that the mountain mentality is one that has great rewards, whereas the molehill mentality reflects a lazy attitude and has little to no rewards.
