As the Patient has Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) it has been advised by The ACSM guidelines and our clinical supervisor that exercise should be terminated if the value of oxygen saturation goes below 88%. The patient has the tendency for his oxygen saturation to sit at 96% when participating in this exercise in previous weeks. Half way through exercising it started to drop and quickly reached 88%. Immediately the exercise was terminated and the patient was advised to take a seat and rest. His oxygen saturation quickly went back up to 97% after recovering for one minute. One of them being that my emotions must not affect my ability to communicate efficiently and effectively. This will allow me to reassure the patient about the complications that are present and keep them calm. Another issue that I will be aiming to correct in the future is being more aware of how patients are presenting earlier on and asking more questions in the beginning of the session. This will allow me to determine if a patient is not feeling well or won't be able to perform at their usual standards.
