Some of these languages are threatened because the children who speak English live near the speakers of the languages. All native North American groups are under pressure and being forced to give up their native languages and to speak English instead. Often television and movies are trying to send the native North Americans a message that frightens the communities, and not only the adults but the children also. In fact, so many of the Native American languages have survived all the way to the 21st century, is a huge evidence that these communities have a lot of strength and fundamental value of their language and culture. Basically, when a community loses its language, it usually loses their cultural identity at the same time. Language loss often has to do with pressure of some kind, and when it is lost, the speakers feel like the symbol was defeated. Genocide is another of the reasons of language extinction. Genocide is the occurring of killing a group of people, especially of those of a particular ethnicity or nation. People do not come into contact with the language, it depends on who control’s it and has the power over it. All of the indigenous languages are threatened, and a lot of them have disappeared and the ones that haven’t are still at risk. If there is a society that speaks the same language as the other language, they are being in contact with at least one other group and most likely several relatively small groups and it is an advantage to maintain different languages.
