If the person have some experiences to talk to Japanese people or to observe their behaviors, he or she would say they are so shy and quiet. In fact, they normally do not speak a lot even if they can speak the language fluently. Are these characteristics really their substance? The answer is NO. The reason why they are so quiet would be based on their culture, education, or the fundamental properties. They more likely focus on harmony in a group: even if a person has an individual opinions, he or she try not to destruct the consensus as long as the opinions are not significant problems. This could be the most distinctive Japanese substance. They also tend to be perfectionists; for example, people, who can speak a non-Japanese language fluently, do not prefer to express their ideas in the language very much because they do not want to disgrace themselves by their mistakes. Even Japanese English teachers believe they are not good at speaking in English. Why was that possible for them? To explain the background of this fact, there are roughly three important elements. The biggest reason was during the recovery, America and Russia were still fighting with each other. Japan was a kind of a big factory of the weapons for the war. Then through the request of up-to-date weapons from America, Japan assimilate the latest skills or techniques from them. Moreover, their diligent, cooperative, or dexterous characteristics led them to have some ideas to invent new technology by analyzing those skills or techniques. The easiest way to show the diligence of Japanese people is telling stories, which are probably unbelievable for non-Japanese, about Japanese. Some of Japanese workers work from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and then often work after 5 p.m. without any payment, called “service” overtime work, and they also can take vacation less than two or three weeks in a year. They know they are working too much by comparing with other countries, but they do not stop working for the companies.
