In the lecture notes this week you gave amplitude of information and empirical evidence, which were the studies involving genetics and alcoholism. Culberson’s Screening instruments and Treatment Strategies, brought up five exams that could be given to someone who appeared to have a drinking problem. Though not all of the exams are the same, it seems like each exam underlines and or looks for specific problems. Such as the CAGE exam with is mainly for those who abuse alcohol and or depend on it. (Culberson, 2006 , pg3)
Gomez, Conde, Santana, Jorrin, Serrano and Medina’s article focused mainly on the AUDIT and AUDIT-C, which as we know due to Culberson’s articles that these are two types of exams primary caregivers can give to patients who may have a drinking problem. These screening instruments were compared in how effective they were when used by individuals 65 and older. The article found that both the AUDIT and the AUDIT-C performed well when detecting individual 65 and older who were drinking hazardous amounts of alcohol. The point of this week's lecture and reading was to teach us that addiction can occur due to different ways. Along with being multiple screening exams for patients who drink, they are not all the same, nor do they show what may be the true underlying problem.
