As of right this moment scientist are still studying and trying to definitively understand the human brain and how it works. Both sides of the argument have valid points. When the argument was first started in 1869 by Francis by Francis Galton, he was basing his arguments off of logic and deductive reasoning. He believed that intelligence was based off of nature and the DNA passed down from generation. Meaning that it’s more likely for one to be born a prodigy if they come from a smart family. Then the argument began to evolved, as technology evolved, researchers were able to study the brain and get a better understanding of how it worked. We began to see how addiction to drugs and alcohol were connected to the genetic mapping of one’s brain. Some people may have addiction predetermined once they are born and some can stop whenever they want. In mehdi’s study he explains that the genetic mapping of one’s brain may not be the primary cause to one’s addiction. In the study he finds that things like; family ties, positive role models, good friends, and a stable upbringing, are very important in determining if one is susceptible to addiction or not. A person needs good friends so they won’t slowly push one closer to drugs/alcohol dependency. One needs good family ties so they feel supported and will not need to depend on anything negative like drugs or alcohol. In conclusion of the study Mehdi found that addiction can be attributed to outside factors other than oneself, as in the people around us. This means that Nurture may be the primary cause of addiction and may have less to do with genetics than Galton originally thought. In the second study, done by Dr. Fatima Kamran, they looked at how different twins really could be even though they have practically the same DNA and come from the same gene pool. The goal of the study is to test the theory that DNA is the root cause of a person's personality
