Staying passive, such as watching television or sitting at home on a computer, can lead to obesity. The amount of time spent watching television is another association with obesity in both children and adults. People who spend more time watching television will be less active and are likely to consume more food while watching television. Stress is another contributing factor to overweight and obesity. Studies have shown chronic stress can negatively affect blood pressure and cholesterol and may lead a person to increase the amount of calories they consume. Instead of buying bigger clothes as one’s waistline expands, one should begin to change one’s lifestyle by maintaining one’s weight. Being obese can cause one to lose self-respect and can cause one to start caring less about one’s body. When a person’s physical appearance sets him or her apart from mainstream society, finding and keeping friends can be hard. Low self-esteem can cause depression and can lead to others avoiding you. All over the world obese people are looked upon as incapable and discriminated because people think they are unable to perform duties. This happens in the workplace, schools, playgrounds and other places. Obese children are at risk of anxiety, often because of the stress of other kids bullying them because of their size (Childhood Obesity Information). The children fear being at school and participating in activities, such as sports and physical activities in which they seem different from other children, because the threat of being bullied.
