Whereas night terrors are intense frightening dreams that cause the subject to suddenly wake up in screams and cries. Night terrors predominantly occur in NREM. Night terrors primarily present themselves in children of three years of age to eight years of age. The subject becomes aroused during night terrors. Sleep apnea is quite typical in the elderly and may recur during the sleep. Sleep apnea is caused when the airways close up, or when the respiratory drive begins to decrease. To prevent sleep apnea one should really watch their weight since obesity is one of the factors. The other factor however is unavoidable. That is, if somebody is a male then they are more prone to suffering from sleep apnea.
Sleep disorders are most of the time genetic, but the environment may even have an influence on them. As a baby falls asleep for the first time it is susceptible to multiple sleep disorders. Once it enters its adolescent years its old sleep disorders fade away and new ones may emerge.
