The United States has taken many steps since the 1950’s when cigarettes were first accepted as the cause of many health problems. There is a strong presence of anti-smoking policies in many states that are only spreading to the rest. These policies have caused many changes to businesses and individuals throughout the nation. Their presence has already decreased the amount of second-hand smoke being inhaled by nonsmokers in public places, as well as increased awareness to everyone on the seriousness of illnesses caused by cigarettes and their smoke. Yet these smoking bans have not made any impact on the number of people dying of smoking-related diseases. In order to decrease the deaths of Americans, there needs to be a more dramatic approach to confronting the smoking of cigarettes. Introducing new policies that limit and then completely end the production of cigarettes, will be extremely beneficial to the cause. This coupled with cessation programs, will help Americans adjust to the desired smoke-free society. By illegalizing the production of cigarettes in the United States, Americans will live in a healthier and happier society. People will not be dependent on a substance for happiness or have to endure addiction and withdrawal. Cigarettes ruin the lives of smokers and nonsmokers alike.
