North Korea, officially The Democratic People’s Republic of North Korea, is a country isolated by its ideals and views. North Korea’s extreme views have caught the attention of media worldwide, as it is so different to most governments. Australia, having been colonized by Britain, appears quite similar to the British system, having human rights and equality at the center of their ideals. Both Australia and North Korea are labeled as liberal democracies on paper, and have written constitutions. Although this, their political systems have vast differences.

The constitution is incredibly difficult to change in Australia, as the only way to do so is to hold a referendum and gain a majority. Only 8 of the 146 attempts at changing the constitution were effective, the last change occurring in 1990. In it’s constitution North Korea labeled itself a democracy or specifically a dictatorship of people’s democracy. A democracy is characterized by a number of principles such as, equality, freedom of speech, fair elections, rule of law, free media, It is heavily speculated that North Korea does not abide by these principles and therefore does not uphold democracy.
To the international world North Korea tries to present itself as a ______, as it’s chosen name suggests. However, any analysis on the North Korean regime shows that it does not uphold any of the key features of a democracy.
