The story is in first person and is about a man that keeps himself isolated from others. The first thing that we learned about the underground man is that he is sick which is caused by his liver and later on has a toothache but the thing is he will not do anything to take care of himself because it gives him pleasure which could be because it gives him the chance to feel something. How he handles relationships at work is also shown but instead of trying to make friends there are times he will glare at and grind teeth just to get a reaction out of them. Provided that the underground man thinks so highly of himself as being more intelligent than anyone else which is seen as being cocky in today’s world. But unlike a normal man who acts on an impulse, the underground man will cower and not solve the issue right at the moment due to all the thoughts crossing his mind. Anytime the underground man has thoughts that deal with emotions being sentimental in an instant he would say those that those feelings are an illusion because he would not know how to deal with it. One way he deals with a certain scenario that can happen to anyone daily is after a police officer nudge him out of the way so that led him to spending a long period of time plotting revenge and did in the most bizarre ways by bumping him on the shoulder but was still not satisfied. For him to do that is not something someone normal will do because each person would have a different reaction to the incident but would not take that amount of time just to plot
