Introduction
In Singapore, Nursing has undergone through professionalization. Before defining Nursing as a profession, we should look at what constitutes professionalization and profession. According to Hamilton (1992 p.32), professionalization is “the process by which an occupation develops the characteristics of a profession". Webster 's Dictionary (quoted in Gokenbach, 2013) defined profession as a "chosen, paid occupation requiring prolonged training and formal qualification". Nursing is a combination of art and science. They did not have a strong desire or envy to become a nurse themselves. (Hemsley-Brown &Foskett, 1999) .
Media
Even though nurses play a major role in the health care organisation, the challenges to attract and retain enough qualified nurses has been an uphill task. Negative effect of media also one of the factors affecting the nursing profession. Léonie Walker ( 2014 ) stated the following : media depiction of nurses continue to show female subordinates performing repetitive, routine, bedside tasks, soothing pillows and following doctors ' orders. Worse, TV preoccupation with human drama and relationships variously portray nurses with extremes of personality -driven dysfunction, manipulation, and doctor/ nurse/patient relationships barely at the margins of credibility (p.2).
In order to enhance the image of the nursing profession, media play a big role. Therefore, to improve the perception of people on nurses, the profession needs more campaigns and targeted recruitments to draw talented individual into the profession.
Retaining the
