In an article called, “Nutrition and Early Brain Development”, by The Urban Child Institute, it is explained how important the role of nutrition is on brain development. The article is concentrated on early brain development, but the science behind nutrition and brain development applies to all ages. Throughout brain development, “Early shortages can reduce cell production; later shortages can affect cell size and complexity. Nutrient deficits also affect the complex chemical processes of the brain and can lead to less efficient communication between brain cells.” (“Nutrition and Early Brain Development” 2). This shows that an improper diet and form of nutrition can greatly reduce the time it takes for one's brain to completely develop. So in other words, the more nutritious your diet is, the faster your brain cells can communicate and grow. This is the reason the age of adulthood has also been delayed. If one is not provided with the proper nutrients, a “Shortage of nutrient such a iron and iodine can impair cognitive and motor development, and these effect are often irreversible.” (“Nutrition and Early Brain Development” 1). Which means that the less nutrients are provided to the body at the developmental phases, the longer it will take for the brain to complete its growth. In order for an individual to properly complete the brain development cycle, “A proper balance of nutrients in this formative period is critical” (“Nutrition and Early Brain Development” 1). Due to the outburst of fast foods and quick meals in our society, people have not been providing their brains with the nutrients. Especially teenagers, because of the fact that they rely on their amygdala for thinking, they don’t realise the effects of nutrition on brain development and continue to
