It seems that from a very young age life circumstances conspire to have all people live by a standardized measure of conformity; however, as with clothing, so with life, one size does not fit all. Author, Daniel Pink (2009) informs us, “Human beings have an inherent tendency to seek out novelty and challenges, to extend and exercise their capacities, to explore, and to learn” (p.8). Yet, the workplace is full of companies still adhering to rule based routine tasks, sets of protocol, and age old business practices based on the fact that people have to earn money, all of which leaves very little room for innate psychological needs. Pink terms these necessities as the three key principals of motivation; they are autonomy (the need to be in charge of our own lives), mastery (the desire to improve our skills), and purpose (answering the call to be of service to something larger than ourselves).
