When Nora and Torvald are discussing about her dress Nora says “But don’t you think it is nice of me, too, to do as you wish?” which Helmer then replies with, “Nice?-because you do as your husband wishes? Well, well, you little rogue, I am sure you did not mean it in that way.” (Ibsen 33). In a healthy relationship, the partners will do something for the other usually because they want to or out of the kindness of their his or her heart. In Helmer’s case, he expects Nora to do as he says, when he says so. He treats her almost like a slave. When Mrs.Linde and Nora are talking at the beginning of the book Nora says, “How painful and humiliating it would be for Torvald, with his manly independence to know that he owed me anything!” (Ibsen 13). A husband owing his wife anything back then would’ve been unheard of at the time. Helmer would never be able to do something for Nora or else it would ruin his image that he’s obsessed over and wants her to fulfill his needs while he’s out working. Although some may believe that gender roles are still not a real thing, there are many that still believe that women are below men, should be objected, and should be dependent on their husband for things, but that is not the case. There are many differences between women and men but they are more similar than most people think. Because of this reason, they should be treated as such. With people becoming more and more open minded and independent gender roles are slowly going away, but despite that are still a major issue today. They not only limit what a person can do, but they also limit the way someone mentally thinks and acts.
