Trait theory examines the key personal characteristics that fundamental leaders exhibit. It tries to determine what traits differentiate leaders from followers. Traits affect how one is perceived by others, which impacts leader effectiveness because leaders less able to influence followers to achieve a common goal if their follows carry a low perception of them. Fundamentally, traits make up the type of person one becomes and can be viewed as a set of behavioral guidelines that can sometimes predict how one acts. My current leader inspires me to be better and helps us understand the vision and value of such a major change. I now feel as though my current manager is honest and competent. The organizational culture is different in that AT&T truly values their employees. This is extremely evident in the fact that they are also going through major directional changes like trying to get into the television industry and moving towards cloud computing, but are willing to invest in their current employees who are willing to take this new direction journey with them by offering additional training and compensating employees though tuition reimbursement programs. Being able to see two different sides of Kouzes and Posner’s key trait theory approach, has given me a greater appreciation for leadership.
